Keep in mind to be picky about what you bring on your backpacking trip. Have a checklist. Bring a compass and learn how to read maps. Don’t forget to bring a cell phone in case of emergency and a first aid kit. Remember be alert in your surroundings while heading the trail. A GPS device will also come in handy.

An easy way to learn is to join a club organization for backpackers, as they will give you more information and tips. They will share their experiences and you will learn and have an idea of knowing what circumstances will arise.

You must also be knowledgeable about first aid, gears needs, repairing gears, information of the area, general safety and health concerns, general hiking information and camping. Armed with knowledge, you are all set to go for backpacking.
