Choosing a Backpack for Backpacking

While backpacking can be enjoyable it is important to consider choosing a backpack for the activity. Choosing a backpack is essential because there are many different kinds of them available, and with the right backpack you can have a better level of control of what you are bringing along with you for a backpacking adventure.

The two kinds of backpacks to look for when choosing a backpack are ones with external frames and ones with internal frames. While the main difference between these two is where the frame is located (inside or outside), there are many other parts of these backpacks to consider. These parts include what you are going to ring for your backpacking trip and what type of terrain you are planning on traveling on.

Let’s look at the external frame backpacks first. An external frame backpack features the frame of the backpack on the outside. The pack bag for it is hung on the pack’s frame. External frame backpacks are larger than typical backpacks, and they feature a good number of pockets for storage. There is also space between the pack and the person’s bag in this kind of backpack, and this helps to improve ventilation. While an external frame backpack is best for heavier loads, it is important to remember that it features a high center of balance, meaning that on uneven terrain it can make you fall at an easier rate.

An internal frame backpack should also be considered when choosing a backpack. The frame for this backpack is on the inside, and it fits right along one’s back. Balance is easy with this kind of backpack thanks to the closer space between the backpack and the person’s back, but it will carry fewer things than an external frame backpack can. There are fewer pockets on this too.

These are the two types of backpacks to consider when choosing a backpack. There are some things to think about before getting one of these types. They include what size of a load you plan on carrying, how many pockets you feel you will need, what type of terrain you will be on (for more uneven terrain an internal frame backpack would work fine), and how long you plan on being out for (if you are out for long an external frame backpack would be better). Remember to consider you individual needs before choosing a backpack that you will especially feel comfortable with.

Overall, when choosing a backpack for backpacking you should consider what you are going to be using the backpack for. Remember that while backpacking can be enjoyable it will only be more enjoyable if you use the right one for your needs.
